MoBay United eyeing spot in JPL semis

April 23, 2026

League leaders Montego Bay United (MBU) whipped Tivoli Gardens 5-1 at Jarrett Park yesterday to close in on an automatic semifinal spot in the Jamaica Premier League.

Tivoli's Denville Watson gave away an own goal in the first minute to give MBU the advantage. Malachi Sterling in the 43rd minute doubled the lead for MBU before Deonjay Brown registered one in the 45th minute to set the tone for a one-sided contest. MBU's Brian Brown later capped the emphatic display with a strike in the 85th minute to further pull away from Tivoli. In the 90th minute, Lucas Lima Correa scored their fifth and final goal.

MoBay United surged further atop the standings to 71 points, while Tivoli remain 10th with 44 points.

Xavier Gilbert, MoBay United's head coach, said the objective is to play in the final.

PLAY IN FINAL

"We are working towards playing all the way to the final game. That is what we are working towards. If we are good enough to lead at this point in time, it says a lot about us. We have been leading for some months now," said Gilbert, who will next face Harbour View.

"We haven't beaten Harbour View all season. We have to be mindful as we have conceded goals, but we have to work on not giving them away and defending. We're going to work on that and, hopefully, we'll get a positive result," added Gilbert.

Jerome Waite, Tivoli's coach, said that the result was disappointing.

"MBU worked hard to score and we just allowed them to play. It is as if we were going through the motions... it is really sad," said Waite.

"We knew it wouldn't be easy to play here in Montego Bay, but at the same time I am still disappointed," Waite added, noting Tivoli didn't create chances.
